The EC has just made a huge pledge – of Euro 3.5 billion over the next 7 years.  We need to find out the details, and a full review of the pledge will happen next week by RESULTS partners in Brussels. But what is clear is that this is a major pledge. Andris Piebalgs, from the European Community, said “This is a contribution from all the citizens of Europe, not just from governments but from everyone on the continent”.

But how can the new funds be spent – can good outcomes be achieved? The Nutrition for Growth summit has been hearing  of positive experiences around the world in combatting hunger and malnutrition. Brazil, co-host of todays event, has eliminated a stunting rate of almost  40%, mainly through strong policies to reduce inequality.  They have invested heavily in Cash Transfers to the poorest.

Peru has cut stunting  by one third in less than a decade  – but what was the secret? “High level commitment is the key’ said the Peruvian minister. “Once we had the support of the Prime Minister and the Vice-President on board we had the political capital to drive change”.  This story speaks strongly to the RESULTS movement.  It is the work of RESULTS volunteers from Australia to Zambia, and everywhere inbetween to create the political will to create change.

The SUN movement – Scaling Up Nutrition – salutes at least ten countries that have address undernutrician  in under a decade.  We see evidence that simple interventions can work – an emphasis on breastfeeding, Vitamin A, among others. There is a World Health Organisation goal  of reducing stunting by 40% by 2025. “We can meet these targets if use our best talents and put in place accountability mechanisms, to measure our success, and hold governments to account”
