Health workers are the life blood of a health system. Without them, babies cannot be delivered safely; vaccines cannot be administered; family planning cannot be provided; and TB and HIV testing and treatment cannot be carried out. It is estimated that there is a global shortage of four million health workers.

In November this year, thousands of policy makers, experts and advocates in the field of health workers will come together in Brazil for the Third Global Forum on Human Resources for Health. The UK Government is sending a delegation of top officials from the Department for International Development to the Forum. We want to ensure that they are carrying the message that this gap is unacceptable and must be closed.
